July 2012 – Scholarship Recipients: Where are they now?

By Megan Morgan

Hello, my name is Megan Morgan. My grandfather, William Burch is a member of the CCTA (CDTOA).  I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship from the CCTA this past fall.

My scholarship went towards funding my college education for my freshman year at San Diego State University.  I decided to major in civil engineering, because I enjoy and excel in mathematics and I think that it would be exciting and interesting to design and build beautiful buildings.  Read more

CCTA - Kittie Buck300

By Kittie Buck

When I was asked to write a “Where Are They Now” article for the CCTA magazine, I started reflecting on my journey through higher education. It has been quite an adventure in which I have learned a lot about my future career as well as learned about what it is like to be a responsible adult.

When I entered college in the fall of 2006 I enrolled at San Jose State University (SJSU), but I was not sure how I was going to pay for college. Thanks to scholarships, such as the ones that CCTA generously awarded, I was able to finance my education. These scholarships allowed me to take out minimal student loans and work a reasonable amount so that my focus could remain primarily on my studies. As I am finishing my graduate school career, I have realized exactly how precious the scholarship money was. After almost 12 months, and I won’t say how much I have accrued in student loans, I realize how lucky I was to be awarded scholarships during my undergraduate education. Read more

May 2012 – Scholarship Recipients: Where are they now?

Scholarship

Hello CCTA! My name is Teddi Nichols and I have been a CCTA scholarship recipient for three years. Because my dad, Doug Nichols, is a member of CCTA, I was able to apply for the scholarships. I received my first scholarship as a senior at Santa Paula High School in 2009 and have received one every year since.

After high school, I attended Ventura College, a community college about fifteen minutes away from my home.  I knew as a senior in high school that I wanted to attend university at some point but figured out that in the long run community college was the best way to go financially. In the two years that I was at Ventura College, I completed the general education curriculum.  Read more

2011 Fundraiser Scholarship News

Despite the downturn in our construction trucking industry (catchy name – right?), our CDTOA members once again came through for our college-bound children and grandchildren and made our latest fundraiser another success.

At the time our San Diego Board Meeting was held, the office had only received $2,475 from the sale of 99 tickets. With the purchase of a one thousand dollar gift card and printing raffle tickets this fundraiser could have had dismal results. However, because many (such as myself) are procrastinators, another $2,415 in tickets and silent auction bids was raised at this meeting. Read more

Reviewing The Freshman Applications

The Scholarship Committee of CDTOA met in early June to review the Freshman Applications and what a wonderful group of applicants we had.

We realize the hardships facing so many in our industry today, and it is for this reason we increased the number of scholarships that were awarded. Awards were given in the names of Walt and Janice Dobbs, Terra Trucking, AADT (American Alliance Drug Testing) and CDTOA.  Read more

May 2010 Update

The CDTOA Scholarship Committee is honored to announce our latest award in the names of Walter and Janice Dobbs.

Past President Walter Dobbs and wife Janice were both founding members of the Scholarship Committee and Janice also served as the committee chairperson for many years after.

At the Ventura Chapter Meeting held April 10, former committee members David Grande and Pirkle presented Walt and Janice with both a plaque and recognition award of both their many years of service and dedication to the Scholarship Committee.

Student Loans – Did You Know?

Unlike other kinds of debt, student loans can be particularly hard to wriggle out of.  Homeowners who can’t make their mortgage payments can hand over the keys to their house to their lender.

Credit-card and even gambling debts can be discharged in bankruptcy. But ditching a student loan is virtually impossible, especially once a collection agency gets involved. Although lenders may trim payments, getting fees or principals waived seldom happens. Read more

Drug Testing Clearinghouse Roll-out Somewhat Incomplete

Some major parts of the puzzle still unclear

By Lee Brown

The Commercial Driver’s License Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse rule was formally proposed in February of this year following at least 16 years of industry discussions and negotiations. The new federal regulation will establish a database of CDL holders who have failed or refused to take drug or alcohol tests or were convicted of driving under the influence, plus other related information.
