The Scholarship Program Challenges the Truck Brokering Community
The Scholarship Committee recently met and discussed ways to increase the scholarship contributions so that we could increase both the number and amount of the scholarships given out each year. We discussed all the existing “designated scholarships” in the name of those who have given and those that continue to give.
Most recently, we decided to name a “Jay Pocock – Superior Trailer Works Scholarship Award,” for Jay’s unwavering and generous hosting of our annual Summer Scholarship Fund Raiser at his yard in Fontana. So far we have scholarships named after the following members, affiliates and organizations:
Walt & Janice Dobbs • Ed Hegarty • Jerry Haworth • Terra Trucking • AADT • CCTA • Ugalde Trucking
During the last meeting of the scholarship committee, Dan Ugalde of Ugalde Trucking, Orange Co., discovered that Fred and Cathy ReCupido of Terra Trucking has been making a yearly $1,500 donation to the scholarship fund for the last 15 years. Immediately hearing this Dan volunteered to match whatever Terra was making.
This sparked the idea to both honor Fred for his generosity and to thank him and Dan and offer a similar challenge to all members, especially brokers.
So we are reaching out to the truck brokering community and offering you the opportunity to invest in the future of our (and your) kids, grandkids etc. with named or designated scholarships each year. In fact, we are challenging all members to make a commitment with a yearly donation. What better way to get involved than through a scholarship with your businesses name attached.
We appreciate all of you who participate by donating cash or auction items and attending or volunteering at the fund raisers each year. Scholarship awards are sometimes the deal maker or breaker for many students in their decision for a higher education, let’s all help to make it a deal-maker.
